I Have Come Home

Secondary logo of the Just A Game with Rob Kerr podcast.

I am proud to join The Nation Network and host “Just A Game with Rob Kerr” three times a week.  I have teased that I am going home and that’s exactly what I am doing.  “Just a Game” was the name of my first sports talk show that I launched in Edmonton in 2001 and that ran until April 2003 when I left to join the FAN 960 in Calgary.  At the time Jason Gregor took over the show and turned “Just a Game” into his own and it quickly became the provincial capital’s best sports show.  Jason has moved on from the name and was a true gentleman allowing me to use it again.

Another part of my coming home is that in the early 2000’s I was part of AnySportAnyTime.com a start-up internet broadcast company that specialized in sports and sportscasting.  While I am proud of the legacy of that venture, it was clear that we were too early in the evolution of streaming and internet broadcasting to get the amount of adoption that was necessary to grow.  My timing is good as Playmaker Capital and specifically, The Nation Network has grown an amazing group of like-minded shows across the country building a foundation for the next generation of sports programming.

Part of Something Big

It’s exciting to work with the guys from the Barn Burner again, I can’t wait to take advantage of Frank Seravalli as an NHL insider, and looking forward to having Ryan Pike join us with the latest on the Flames just to drop a few names.  There are other additions coming that will allow us to become the home of sports in Calgary and across Canada.

I retired in August of 2018 from radio because it was evolving away from the format and programming that I enjoyed.  As far as I was concerned it lost its soul and I didn’t like it, but hey things change so no hard feelings, and it was time to move on.  The past 4 years were a roller coaster for many reasons that are mostly pandemic related, I learned a lot, saw a lot, did a lot, and had a breakdown.  In October I came to a crossroads that thousands come to every year, what’s next?

I did my due diligence on the broadcast side and met with some really great groups about starting my own podcast, but it was my friend Boomer and the success of the Barn Burner that really set things in motion.  He introduced me to Jay and Jarred from The Nation Network and things progressed fairly quickly.

Back to Where I Started

In 2001 when I first launched “Just A Game” with Rob Kerr on Light AM930 in Edmonton my mentor and radio legend John Short gave me some great advice “be honest and be yourself”.  Now as I start this journey the advice that The Nation Network has given me is similar “don’t do anything that will put any of us in jail”.  All joking aside what The Nation Network has given me is freedom.  Freedom to talk about what I want and to whom I want.  God bless Kelly Kirch, my old program director at 960 he tried to protect that freedom, but the Rogers machine was too big, and I felt I was just space between ads by the end of my run.

On my first show, I plan on sharing a bit of a manifesto of what my plans are for my new show, but here it is in a nutshell.  We will be on top of the Flames and the NHL, we are going to talk about the other teams in our area, but most importantly we are going to talk to the movers and shakers in Calgary.  You can expect to hear some familiar voices and I hope to develop some new ones.  At the core, it’s a Calgary show that I want you to listen to for information, not affirmation.  I will always try my best to give you facts, and of course, you will get my opinions, but they are not necessarily the same thing.

When and where

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will be LIVE from 1-3 pm MT and available on your favorite podcast platforms so you can listen when and where you want.  (Note:  First show because of the long weekend will be on a Tuesday) But why just 3 days a week?  Great question and I will say that’s where we are going to start.
